About The People's Chocolate

Our History

We are a start-up, seeking board members. We aren't out to produce containers of chocolate. We are out to bring awareness of Climate Change  affecting cacao farmers and families, and to donate our profits to help mitigate, protect and alleviate the devastation of floods and typhoons, drought and other extreme weather. At the People's Chocolate, we envision a world where chocolate is not just a treat but a tool for positive change. We strive to create a model that combines the supreme joy of consuming chocolate with sustainability. We'll do this by producing the highest quality bean-to-bar chocolate in the world. We prioritize eco-friendly practices in every step of our chocolate production. From growing and harvesting cacao to reduce carbon footprints to using renewable energy, we are dedicated to fighting climate change.

Our Mission

At The People's Chocolate, our mission is to provide our customers with the highest quality cacao products, gifts and chocolate. We are committed to sustainable, ethically produced bean-to-bar chocolate and to protect our land and livelihoods for future generations. We believe that by supporting efforts to curb the devastation of climate change, we can help build stronger and more resilient cacao farms and families.

Our Team

Our team at The People's Chocolate will be made up of dedicated farmers, activists, and support staff who are passionate about what they do. Chocolate production is not just farm and factory work, it is an art form, and ours is The Art of Making Chocolate that brings awareness of Climate Change and its affect on cacao farmers and families.

Welcome to the Journey of The People's Chocolate

The staff at a  Filipino BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) company was

brainstorming about how to help the people of Mindanao, Philippines who have suffered so

greatly, lately, with constant floods and relentless typhoons. Since our initial start-up, we've discovered that this problem is a global problem for cacao farmers all over the world, and especially, because of rising sea levels, the cacao farmers in Southeast Asia are even more at risk.

Our Story

Right now, this is just an idea. But hard-working cacao farmers from Southeast Asia are already growing, harvesting, and roasting beans from small family farms.

Our Products

We will produce the best chocolate in the world. We have everything we need and many hands on the farms will continue to do what they have done, except now, experts from around the world will help them craft, not just the cocoa (the dried powder from the roasted beans mixed with sugar), but an "ethically-sourced, organically-produced, fair-trade bean-to-bar chocolate," Food of the Gods "designed" to be excellent and unsurpassed.

The Situation

Why is this important?

CLIMATE CHANGE AND CHOCOLATE

The People's Chocolate was formed to eventually be a nonprofit organization in September 2024 in Manila, Philippines as a retail  brand of quality chocolate that will donate 100% of its profits to help the cacao farmers recover from the devastation  of typhoons and floods and help prepare them for future severe weather.

A volunteer board of directors will seek partner organizations and individuals to help bring awareness of climate change in Asia and provide funding to alleviate the suffering of farmers and those most affected by the disasters and to support efforts to prepare them for, and mitigate, future weather events which are growing in frequency and severity.

THE SITUATION

The scientific evidence is unequivocal: climate change is a threat to human wellbeing and the health of the planet. Any further  delay in concerted global action will miss the brief, rapidly closing window to secure a livable future.  That is the warning issued by the highest international authority, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change of the United  Nations.

The Philippines is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Rising sea levels, higher temperatures, and increased  frequency of typhoons and extreme weather events can cause floods, landslides, and erosion that pollute water resources,  damage infrastructure, destroy crops, and lead to loss of lives and livelihoods.

About 20 typhoons hit the archipelgo every year. These and other extreme weather phenomena intensify due to sustained global emission and  bring havoc to people, nature, agriculture, economy, and infrastructure.

CACAO FARMING

Climate change significantly impacts cacao farming by causing increased temperatures, irregular rainfall patterns, and more  frequent droughts, leading to reduced yields, increased pest and disease outbreaks, and potential loss of suitable growing  areas, particularly in the cacao-producing region's of Southeast Asia, putting a strain on the livelihoods of cacao farmers.

With increasing temperatures and more severe periods of drought and rainfall, cacao farmers are struggling to produce the  yields they need to supply chocolate's main ingredient. In the entire archipelago, farmers in the cacao-growing hotspots are increasingly confronting this reality.

WHAT HAPPENED IN 2024?

Heavy rainfall hammered Southeast Asia in 2024, triggering landslides and causing floods. Well over 5 million people have been harshly affected. Over 1,00,000 families' lives, acrossthe entire archipelago of Southeast Asia have been  disrupted. Nearly 500,000 remain displaced. Many have lost everything.

WHAT CAN BE DONE?

Besides activism and large-scale global efforts to curb climate change by political action with policy changes, there are things  that can be done locally to mitigate the damage of floods and typhoons, such as planting shade trees can help  regulate temperature and humidity levels, creating a more favorable environment for cacao trees; and implementing efficient  irrigation practices. Also, developing climate-resilient cacao varieties is possible, and doing research and development of cacao  cultivars with higher tolerance to extreme weather conditions. Plus, implementing practices like agroforestry to enhance soil health and biodiversity.

SOLUTIONS

These and other nature-based solutions leverage the intrinsic abilities of natural river systems to deliver climate resilience at a  lower cost than traditional infrastructure development while minimizing negative environmental and social impacts. The  approach is science-based and follows the principles of participatory water resources management. Solutions also include  planting mangroves, restoring wetlands, and building bioswales.

HOW WILL THE PEOPLE’S CHOCOLATE HELP?

Every penny of profit from the sale of chocolate and other products produced by The People’s Chocolate will be used to relieve the suffering of those  farmers who have been the most impacted as  well as working with sister organizations to communicate the problems that climate change is causing. Such projects as the nature-based solution listed above will be a focal point of the organization and other initiatives  to alleviate, protect, and mitigate the future disasters caused by severe weather.

Why

Weathering the Storm

Mindanao is the bread basket of the Philippines, just like Phitsanulok Province is to Thailand, and also home to hundreds of cacao producing farms and families. Chocolate is made from Cacao and sugarcane, both of which are important agricultural products of Southeast Asia. No other region is more threatened by climate change than Southeast Asia.

But there are things  that can be done locally to mitigate the damage of floods and typhoons such as planting shade trees to help  regulate temperature and humidity levels, creating a more favorable environment for cacao trees; and implementing efficient  irrigation practices. Also, developing climate-resilient cacao varieties is possible, and doing research and development of cacao  cultivars with higher tolerance to extreme weather conditions. Plus, implementing practices like agroforestry to enhance soil health and biodiversity.

Southeast Asia and Climate Change

Here is what the World Bank projects about Climate Change in Southeast Asia:   Based on the study, climate change clearly poses a threat to human survival. It foretells of the submergence of coastal communities due to sea-level rise. It also projects the occurrence of frequent and stronger typhoons, and of prolonged, intense heat in the summers and heavy rains and flooding during rainy season. It also tells of the dire consequences of these natural catastrophes to human habitation, food supply, the degradation of ecosystem services and eventual extinction of some species. This clearly shows that climate change is a development issue that threatens the gains and economic development attained in past decades. Agriculture, for instance, which relies on a stable, regular weather pattern will be adversely affected, if such pattern is disrupted by climate change.

Collective Action

Every penny of profit from the sale of chocolate and other products produced by The People’s Chocolate of Asia will be used to relieve the suffering of those farmers who have been the most impacted as  well as working with sister organizations to communicate the problems that climate change is causing.

Such projects as nature-based solutions, listed above will be a focal point of the organization and other initiatives  to alleviate, protect, and mitigate the future disasters caused by severe weather.

What is Fair Trade Chocolate

Courtesy of Equal Exchange

This video points out poor business practices such as exploiting child labor. This is an issue we're in favor of protesting. But our story is focussed on weather disasters, especially connected to Climate Change. Still, our chocolate will be fairly traded and ethically produced. This video will help our audience understand the complexity of chocolate production and the inequitable economics of a typical chocolate business. The People's Chocolate is exactly what the name implies. A chocolate company of the people who support farmers and cacao production in by helping to alleviate, protect and mitigate the damages of severe weather such as typhoons, floods and drought.

Our Story

The People's Chocolate  won't solve climate change. Climate change presents major problems for the cacao farmers as well as all agriculture, world wide. But there are ways to mitigate, allevate, and proftect agains severe weather events. And perhaps the main lesson to learn when dealing with climate change is how to adapt. We formed our nonprofit because we envision a world where chocolate is not just a treat but a tool for positive change.

Sugarcane from Southeast Asia

Naturally, you can't make bar chocolate without sugar. As early as 1750’s sugar was  already  being  exported  by  Asia.  Among the  first  foreign

markets were  Spain, China, India  and other Asian  countries.   Australia was  also once an  importer of

Asian sugar.  In 1796, sugar trade with the United States began with an initial shipment of about 350

metric tons

Sustainable Farming

We believe that sustainable farming practices are essential for the health of our planet and our customers. That's why we use natural fertilizers, crop rotation, and other sustainable practices to grow our produce.

Supporting Local Communities

Supporting Local Communities

We are proud to be a part of the local community and support local initiatives. We plan to work with local sfarms and other sister organizations to provide educational programs and donate 100% of our profits to alleviate, mitigate and protect against climate change and perhaps most importantly, to help farmers adapt to the circumstance..
